The FA’s Change to Youth Football in England from 2026/27

FutureFit: A New Era for Grassroots Football

The Football Association (FA) is introducing FutureFit, a transformational update to youth football in England, set to take effect from the 2026/27 season. This initiative aims to enhance player development by adjusting team formats, maximising ball time, and improving engagement levels for young players.

Key Changes

  • 3v3 for U7s – A new small-sided format designed to provide more touches on the ball, more action, and better early-stage development.
  • 11v11 from U14s – Players will stay in smaller-sided formats (5v5, 7v7, and 9v9) for longer, ensuring a stronger technical foundation before transitioning to full-sized football.

Why These Changes?

The FA’s FutureFit builds on the 2012 youth football reforms, further refining how young players develop through the game. Research from Liverpool John Moores University (400+ games analysed) has shown that smaller-sided games lead to:

  • Increased technical play
  • More physical activity
  • Greater engagement and enjoyment

What This Means for Your Team

From the 2026/27 season, teams will adapt to these structural changes, with a focus on: 3v3 for U7s – The perfect introduction to football, maximising touches and fun. Smaller formats for longer – Ensuring that players stay in more technical settings before moving to 11v11 at U14. Evolving laws of the game – Simplified restarts and age-appropriate rules to support development.

How the Game Will Evolve

  1. Age-Appropriate Rules – Complex laws will be gradually introduced as players progress, aligning with their developmental stages.
  2. More Ball-in-Play Time – Adjusted restarts for younger age groups to keep the game flowing.
  3. A Structured Pathway from U4 to U18 – Ensuring a smooth, development-focused transition between formats.
